Five myths about being in business and what you need to be instead

Number one if you build it they will come

Until you figure out where you are going to get your clients from and go out and get them. No one is coming. I know this may sound harsh and I know you need to hear it. Without going out and connecting with people to find clients your business will struggle. Go out and make new friends. We cover this in the BEYOND Common Success Essentials course so you can learn tried and true strategies for going out and getting quality clients because no one is coming just because you decided to open.

Number two Oh it will be easy

At some point when we start our first business or commission job we think Magical fairy dust is going to show up and make growing our business easy.I was so guilty of thinking this before I opened my first business and  I'm not sure where this comes from but I do know if it was easy everyone would do it. So to stand out from the sea of sameness in your industry you must be willing to put in the work and you must be willing to do what everyone else is unwilling to do.

If you need more help creating a strategic roadmap of what to do to stand out in your industry I suggest hiring a business coach or taking a course that will help you find exactly what you want to be known for. If you are in the creative service industry Salon owners, Hair Stylists, photographers, fitness trainers, graphic artists, media managers, etc.  My Beyond Common Success Essentials course is a great place to start. If you're ready to hit the ground running and want to get there quicker and faster than you ever thought possible you can hire a coach to work with you one-on-one.  Number three  I'm My Own Boss

This is one of the biggest myths in business, especially in today's day and age. There is so much noise about boss babe this  and I’m a  Boss that  boss boss and blah blah blah.

I am all about empowering and inspiring female entrepreneurs and business owners to live their best life and  design their business around what  enhances their  quality of their life. I also believe that hustle is Dead and  Self Care is in.

However I  just constantly hear in the media. This whole thing about I'm My Own Boss beeswax and  it just isn't true.  If you have customers those are your bosses then as you grow and have staff they become your boss. Basically  every single client, customer and staff member that you serve in doing and running your business those are all your bosses.

The minute that we think or put ourselves above all of that it becomes impossible to grow your business.  By all means open your own business because you have an Innovative idea you want to make your own products. You want to do something revolutionary and different than what everyone else is doing. That's awesome but if you for one second think that you're the boss and you get to come and go as you please.  It  just isn't the case because when you're the boss you can be called in the middle of the night because there is a pipe burst in your business you can be called in on your only day off to fill in because everybody else called off.  If a client is struggling to login to your online database they're going to reach out with complaints and you're going to want to handle and take care of that as soon as possible so that you make a good impression and make sure your clients know how much you value them. Make sure you're going in business because you're in love with your clients, not because you're in love with “being the BOSS” because that will lead you down the road of absolute misery.

Number four this is the way it's always been done

When you open a new business, be very careful not to make the same mistakes that everybody else is making. If there are 50 salons or 50 hair stylists doing the exact same thing there is no point in opening up another Salon renting another salon suite to run a business doing the exact same thing. Unless you have a value proposition and point of difference you will never stand out from the sea of sameness and you will continue only picking up the scraps of the Innovative leaders that have gone before you. I know it's hard to hear but I want you to know the truth, you can't keep doing something because that's the way it's always done or there will be no way to grow and scale your business. Unless you are willing to take the risk and do something new you are probably better off being the highest paid employee.

Number five  you have to be the best in the world to have a good business.

So many aspiring business owners have said  oh I'm going to wait till I'm the absolute best  before I do that or I can't do that because I'm not the best at that or you have to be the best best best . Actually the truth is you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to make your customers happy and still be profitable. We've all met those people that were the absolute best at  something and still end up nowhere because being the best made them slightly arrogant, maybe a little bit cocky. This is not always the best place to serve, therefore clients don't always feel comfortable working or giving their hard-earned money to a person or business that makes them feel Less than.  Remember business is always about people and you have to make people feel good about doing business with you so the only thing you have to be the best at  is how you serve your customer and create the best customer experience.
